Essential CPR & Water Safety Tips
Spring Break is the perfect time for family vacations, beach trips, and poolside fun. But amidst all the excitement, safety should be a top priority. Drowning and choking incidents increase during this season, making CPR and water safety knowledge essential. Here’s how you can prepare to keep your loved ones safe:
- Know the Signs of Drowning
Drowning doesn’t look like the dramatic splashing you see in movies. It’s often silent and happens in seconds. Watch for these signs:
• Head low in the water, mouth at water level
• Gasping or struggling to breathe
• Arms reaching out but unable to move effectively
• Glassy or closed eyes
If you see someone in distress, call for help immediately and be ready to perform CPR if needed. - Learn Hands-Only CPR
In an emergency, every second counts. Hands-Only CPR can double or triple survival chances if performed immediately. Follow these simple steps:
• Call 911
• Push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of a song like “Stayin’ Alive” (110-120 beats per minute)
Consider taking a CPR certification class so you can respond confidently in an emergency. - Practice Water Safety Rules
• Always have a designated water watcher, especially for children.
• Use Coast Guard-approved life jackets for weak swimmers or in large open water (lakes/oceans)
• Teach kids to never swim alone and to stay within arm’s reach of an adult. - Be Prepared for Choking Incidents
Poolside snacks and quick meals can lead to choking hazards. Know the Heimlich maneuver for both adults and children:
• Stand behind the person and place your fist above their belly button.
• Perform quick, upward thrusts until the object is expelled.- You can view Relief of Choking videos here: RELIEF OF CHOKING
